World Maths Day in Primary 1

25th Mar 2026

We had a fantastic time in P1 celebrating World Maths Day! Our classroom was full of curious minds, busy hands, and lots of mathematical thinking.

This week, we have been learning all about doubles using colourful ladybird spots. The children loved drawing their own ladybirds and creating matching pairs. We had to use our wiggly magic fingers to double the number of spots with our special magic words: "Hubble, bubble, double trouble!" Who knew we had so many magical children in P1 and it really helped to develop the concept of doubling as the same again.

We also explored Cuisenaire rods for the very first time. There was lots of excitement as we explored the different colours and lengths of the rods and we began to explore how the different lengths fit together and what they could show us about numbers. This early exploration will be a brilliant foundation for investigating number bonds.

The children showed great focus, teamwork, and enthusiasm throughout the activities. We’re so proud of how confidently they’re beginning their maths journey!
