The Big Summer Read!🌟📚

22nd Jun 2026

Today we had a lovely visit from Louise and Feeonagh from Portaferry Library. They launched NI Libraries ‘Big Summer Read’ which starts on 29th June and runs for nine weeks. This is a very important initiative to keep children reading, engaged in learning and taking part in lots of activities in a group setting at the library. The aim is that our pupils will visit the library at least four times over the summer break to ‘Grow their Story Tree’ as they read, enjoy and exchange a range of genres of books, meet some experts like comic artists, archaeologists, authors, gardeners and complete lots of arts and crafts.

Along the way the children will achieve certificates, bookmarks and ultimately improve reading, spelling, language and group work skills. Parents, we would love you to be as enthusiastic about ‘The Big Summer Read’ as your children were this morning and encourage your child to sign up for as many of the exciting weekly events as possible. If your child uses Accelerated Reader, the librarians can also help them to find lots of different types of books within their Reading Range which can be used to ‘Grow their Story Tree’ too. Good luck everyone!🌟
