STEM experiment in Primary 6

17th Oct 2022

As part of our procedural writing lessons, Primary 6 have been learning how to follow and recount a procedure. This term we have examined the features of recipie and discussed how a science experiment has similarities.

Today we carried out a special hallowe'en themed science experiement where we created pumpkin lava lamps. We discussed and took note of all of the equipment we needed as well as the method of the experiment. We designed our own spooky jam jars and filled them with water, food dye, glitter; oil and then dropped an effervescent tablet in to the mixture to see what would happen!

We discussed the properties of oil and water and why they do not mix, learning that this is because water is more dense than oil. We also witnessed the chemical reaction when the carbon in the efferbescent tablet hit the water. We watched as the bubbles fizzed up as the carbon and water mixed to release carbon dioxide.

We can't wait to write up this experiment and maybe try it again with different colours and possibly some glitter!
