Space Week - Day 1

1st Jun 2020

This week at St. Mary’s, we will be exploring the moon, the solar system and the galaxy during ‘Space Week’. On Saturday we were lucky enough to experience the launch of NASA’s Space X Falcon 9 rocket and two American astronauts in to space. If the sky was clear enough near you, you may have caught a glimpse of it on Saturday night on its second orbit!

We’re also very lucky to have some budding scientists and space enthusiasts in our school! It was fantastic to receive some photos of our pupils learning all about space and Science through a number of activities.

Cahlie (P5) & Harrison (P2) are delighted to learn it's Space Week! On Saturday evening they were allowed to stay up way past their bedtime and just after 10pm they went to the very top of the windmill hill and looking south west caught a glimpse of the SpaceX Dragon on its way to the International Space Station! Harrison was very excited to see something that was on its way to outer space! They also both found it very funny that the astronauts have taken a toy dinosaur with them on their amazing journey! They hope to follow their progress!

Ethan (P7) and Chloe (P7) were also very excited to get started with their space project, learning all about our solar system. Chloe drew a fantastic picture of the moon and Ethan created a diagram of our solar system. I love all the detail in both your pictures and Ethan’s labels for each planet! His mum tells me that he has downloaded the SkyVeiw lite app and has pinpointed where each of the planets are… even from the living room!

Bradan (P6) and Aoibhe (P5) were scientists for a day and carried out our ‘galaxy jar’ experiment. They tried both vegetable oil and baby oil but found the cooking oil worked better. They also enjoyed watching the solar space video and national geographic 'living in the space station' video, presented by an astronaut living above the earth. They were also busy yesterday morning and went to the beach to jump over the waves. They tell me ‘the water was freezing’.

We also set a whole school and family challenge to build a rocket. John Gerard (P7) and his sister Kate (P2) worked together to create a rocket out of Lego. Also, Daniel (nursery) spent the morning building another fantastic rocket with his Dad. We hope you all had fun making them.

Well done to all our space explorers today! If you want to get involved, send any pictures to kgreen727@c2kni.net.

Finally Adam (P4) & Lucy (Nursery) placed their ribbons at school railings while out on their daily walk. They enjoyed looking at all the other ribbons also. Remember you can still add ribbons to the railing if you have not already done so. Ava (P3)has also been busy reading and answering questions on 'The last noo noo' by Jill Murphy and counting in twos. Keep up the great work everyone.
