P4 Inspiring Young Enterprise!🌟

18th Jun 2026

On Tuesday of this week, P4 took part in a live, online Teams lesson with ‘Young Enterprise Northern Ireland’. The purpose of the lesson was to get children thinking about amounts of money in three different ways; spending some, saving some and growing some through a mini-enterprise.

The lesson encouraged the children to really look at coins and notes, count them, make totals and calculate change. It also focused on places where the children could save money e.g. piggy banks, banks, the credit union etc. It looked at the difference between savings cards, debit cards and credit cards ensuring that the children become aware of the importance of saving and using both cash and cards in a safe, effective way as they grow up.

The lesson discussed how children can enjoy spending a little of their own money; creating independence and problem-solving skills e.g. buying their own break snack in school or paying with coins in the local shop. The children were encouraged to talk about the the difference between ‘a need’ and ‘a want’.

Finally, the children were put into groups and had to come up with a little business idea which could generate a ‘profit’. Mrs O’Neill thinks that P4 will certainly have lots of ‘Entrepreneurs of the Future’.

The class are really looking forward to reading their class book ‘On the Money’ during reading time this week and next week to see if they come up with even more business ideas. Amazing work P4!🌟
