P4 Library visit to celebrate ‘Book Week NI’🌟📚

20th Oct 2025

Primary Four visited Portaferry Library today. They met Bangor born author Marianne McShane who recently published wonderful books based on local myths and legends. She is a lovely lady and the children listened attentively as she read her story; ‘Ronan and the Mermaid’ which is set on the edge of the Irish Sea and in Bangor Abbey. She talked about her journey from being a librarian in America to becoming a writer. She talked about local landmarks, Selkies, monks and seals which fitted right in with their ‘Rescue at Sea’ topic. She talked about her love of the Irish language and how her next book will be published in both Irish and English. She wrote two beautiful messages for the boys and girls inside the covers of Mrs O’Neill’s copies of her books. The children asked lots of fabulous questions and enjoyed exploring the library. The Portaferry librarians and councillor Joe Boyle were very impressed with the knowledge, topic work and behaviour of everyone. The librarians issued some library application forms for those children who are not yet members and wish to join.

When the class got back to school they examined the c2k NewsDesk. They listened to the articles about ‘Book Week NI’. They watched the story of ‘The Library Lion’ and read about lots of famous authors and illustrators.

P4 also had some more wonderful STEM Lighthouse projects arrive in class today. Keep up the great work everyone!🌟
