P4 โLeave No Traceโ workshop!๐๐
As part of their ‘What a Waste’ WAU topic, Mrs O’Neill organised a very interactive learning experience for P4 today. Dr Gavin Grant from Mourne & Down Council alongside Karina and Colleen from Ards and North Down Borough Council presented a wonderful workshop on the importance of looking after waste and rubbish in order to protect the creatures and habitats of our local and wider areas.
The children discussed habitats like Strangford Lough, The Irish Sea, seashores, rock pools, sand dunes, grasslands, hedgerows and mountain ranges. They discussed the effects that humans have on these areas and the importance of not disturbing the wildlife or leaving rubbish behind which could potentially harm or endanger many species.
The children actively looked at reducing, recycling and reusing materials in a positive way through games and quizzes. They also took part in an experiment to show the effects of coastal erosion and how this can be helped by planting marram grass to make sandy areas more stable.
Dr Gavin showed the children a range of shells, fossils, bones and shark eggs. Mrs O’Neill and Shena both think that there are a lot of future marine biologists in P4!๐
