Exploring the World of Weather in Primary 4!
Over this half term, our enthusiastic Primary 4 students and some of Ash Class, embarked on an exciting journey of discovery, delving into the fascinating topic of Weather as part of their "World Around Us" curriculum. The children explored how weather varies across the globe and investigated its profound impact on our daily lives, including its effects on landscapes, hobbies, clothing, transport, and plants.
Integrating STEM activities into their studies, the students had a fantastic time creating rain gauges and windmills, fostering hands-on learning and teamwork. The Primary 4 children will monitor their rain gauges and weather stations in the coming weeks. Their curiosity didn't stop there! Our budding scientists also delved into mini water cycle experiments, drawing links to the remarkable story of “Noah and the Great Flood”. Our weather adventurers were charmed by the insights of Barra Best, a renowned local weather reporter, who became a guiding star for their learning. Inspired by his work, the students explored concepts like thermal energy and renewable wind energy, enriching their understanding of how weather influences the world around us. They then followed up this learning with wonderful outdoor lessons using wind gliders and parachutes.
In their quest for knowledge, the children engaged in collaborative group projects, researching the weather and climate of various countries all over the world. They channeled their creativity by crafting detailed scripts and employing green screen technology to produce their own weather reports as budding meteorologists. These activities not only fueled their imagination but also honed ICT skills such as filming, presenting and video editing, all promoting effective communication. Outdoor learning became a vibrant part of the curriculum, as the students explored the elements firsthand, complementing their classroom activities. The children eagerly embraced the challenge of linking different subjects, taking part in cross-curricular learning that encompassed the World Around Us, STEM, ICT, and outdoor adventures.
We are incredibly proud of our Primary 4 students for their energy, enthusiasm, and the wealth of knowledge they gained during this half term. Their understanding of weather and climate has deepened, and they've developed invaluable skills in research, collaboration, and presentation.
Mrs O’Neill, Miss McCarthy, Miss Henning and Shena are all so proud of your hard work as wonderful weather reporters.
