As part of our mathematics lessons we are looking at how to convert one unit of measurement into another. The children explored how changing millimetres to cm involves multiplying and dividing by 10, changing metres to cm involves multiplying and dividing by 100 and changing metres to kilometres involves multiplying and dividing by 1000.
To help the children understand the concept of numerical digits moving along a number line the children demonstrated this practically by becoming the numbers. Children from the class asked "the numbers" to multiply or divide by 10, 100 or 1000 and watched as they moved. The children were able to say if the amount of moves and direction moved were correct.
This children really enjoyed this activity and it helped them visualise the concept, they learnt that the number order doesn't change, it just moves position along their place value line.
